Locals throw their best pitches at Iowa State Fair horseshoe contest

DES MOINES — Many area competitors took part in the Iowa State Fair Horseshoe Contest. The State Fair hosted both championship and open class competitions every fair day. Division winners are crowned daily. All horseshoe pitching competitions took place on the clay courts just east of Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall.

Randy Clark, of Monroe, shared fourth place with Steve Hatch, of Knoxville, and Bert Logsdon, of Osceola, in the Iowa State Regional Championship at Iowa State Fair Horseshoe Contest on Aug. 14. That same day, Morgan DeHaai, of Monroe, finished fourth in Class D of the open singles — afternoon competition.

Clark and partner Leo Toby, of New Boston, Ill., took fourth place in Class B of the Doubles State Championships division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament on Aug. 15. In Class C, Jennifer Douglas, of Newton, and Steve Hatch, of Knoxville, placed third.

Cody Courtney, of Prairie City, placed fifth in the Iowa State Junior Championship. He also placed fifth in Class E of open singles on Aug. 16. Clark placed fifth in Class A of the open singles.

The Iowa State Fair Midwest Senior Classic tournament was held Aug. 17. Clark placed third in Class C. On the same day, Clark paired up with Toby once more and placed fourth in Class A open doubles.

Iowans from all around the region gathered on Aug. 19 for the Senior Championship division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. Clark placed fourth in Class A.

Clark returned to open class competition on Aug. 20, placing first in Class B in the afternoon and third in the evening tournament. Ron Tangeman and Gerald Leffler, both of Monroe, place first and second, respectively, in the Class C tournament during the afternoon rounds. Leffler placed first in the evening tournament. In Class D, Colby Tool, of Monroe, place fourth in the afternoon and second in the evening.

Tangeman competed in the Class B open singles tournament Aug. 21 and place first in his class. Tool competed in Class C and place third.
