DES MOINES — Judges had their plates full with a record number of entries in the Machine Shed & Gold Medal Flour Pies competition, judged Aug. 17 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.
Phyllis Olson, of Newton, took second place in the butterscotch category and third place in the gooseberry and rhubarb custard categories.
Entries were judged on quality of crust, filling, general appearance and originality.
Patriotic Cookie Jar
DES MOINES — Honoring men and women in uniform was the goal for the A Cookie Jar for the Armed Forces contest judged Aug. 23 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.
Second place was awarded to Phyllis Olson, of Newton.
Contestants were required to decorate a cookie jar for the Armed Forces and fill it with at least three different kinds of cookies.
