Clifton Zickel, 93, of Newton, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2015, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A time of remembrances for Clifton will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials have been designated in Clifton’s name or Jasper County Historical Society or Jasper County Community Center.

H. Clifton Zickel, the son of Harry P. and Anna (Ver Steeg) Zickel, was born Jan. 3, 1922, near Galesburg, and attended Galesburg schools. A lifelong resident of the Jasper County area, he had farmed most of his life.

On June 23, 1946, Clifton was united in marriage with Irene Rose Hotger in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was also employed by the Maytag Company and later drove a maintainer for Jasper County. He devoted his life to his wife Irene, his family and friends, and was a member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau, Zoar Church, where he served on its board and cemetery association for many years. He was involved with Angus cattle and retained a membership to the American Angus Association, was a life member of the Elks Lodge #1270 in Newton, and continued his involvement in many agricultural organizations.

Those left to honor Clifton’s memory include his many nephews and nieces, Ron and Judy Hotger, Bill and Linda Hotger, Richard and Ellen Powell, Tom and Debbie Powell, Dale and Ruth Miller, Leroy Damman, Kathy and Larry Milburn, Becky and Reed Powell-Renneckar, RoseAnn and Jack Byers, Tanya Danforth, Connie Keig, Sandy and Gary McDonald, Norma Jean Brandt and Ruth and Raymond Frohwein; and his many friends.

Clifton was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Irene on June 8, 2002; and his two brothers, Chester and Merle Zickel.
