Quick breads champ crowned at the Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES — The Iowa Bed and Breakfast Quick Breads competition was judged Aug. 14 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Jeffrey King, of Newton, and Barb Miller, of Prairie City, had several entries in the competition. King earned first place in biscuits, second in flavored biscuits and third in corn meal muffins. Miller received second place in cake mix bread and dried fruit (dates, prunes, raisins, etc.), and third apricot bread, pumpkin (with nuts) and pumpkin raisin.

Famous Breads

DES MOINES — Jeffrey King, of Newton claimed third in the Frances Miller’s Famous White Bread contest judged Aug. 14 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Contestants were required to use the provided white bread recipe. Entries were judged on appearance, taste, texture and resemblance to Frances Miller's white bread.

Miracle Whip Salads

DES MOINES — Amber Wagner, of Prairie City, received an honorable mention from the judges in the Miracle Whip Salads competition, judged Aug. 15 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Entries were judged on taste, appearance, originality and best use of Miracle Whip.

Candy Makers

DES MOINES — The top candy makers from across the state squared off in the Chocolate Storybook Candies competition judged Aug. 14 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

In the Fudges division, Phyllis Olson, of Newton, earned second place in the basic fudge (no marshmallow creme) category.

In the Variations of Candy division, Linda Isley, of Baxter, received third place in the caramels category.

Memorable Desserts

DES MOINES — Amber Wagner, of Prairie City, received first place and a $100 prize in the Memories for Myrna contest judged Sunday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

A honorable mention was awarded to Phyllis Olson, of Newton.

Entries were judged on presentation, taste and degree of difficulty.

Flour Yeast Rolls


DES MOINES — Phyllis Olson, of Newton, received second place in the butterhorn rolls category and third place in the coffee cake, whole cake category in the King Arthur Flour Yeast Rolls competition, judged Aug. 15 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and texture.

Taste of Honey

DES MOINES — Phyllis Olson, of Newton, received second place in the breads category in the Taste of Honey Challenge competition, judged Saturday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Contestants were tasked with creating an award-winning food that utilizes honey as the sole sweetener.

Entries were judged on taste, appearance and best use of honey.
