Main Street, United Way to host downtown miniature golf event

Newton Main Street is hosting an upcoming downtown miniature golf event in support of United Way of Jasper County.

The event, on Aug. 29, features nine Main Street District businesses hosting custom-made miniature golf holes inside their buildings.

Golfers can sign up on the day of the event from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce, 113 First Ave. W. and have until noon to finish the course.

“The idea is to bring people downtown to have a good time at a family-friendly activity and increase visibility for downtown businesses at the same time,” said Andrew Bassman, director of Newton Main Street.

United Way of Jasper County also will host fundraising activities during the event and promote its annual fundraising campaign, which starts on Sept. 3.

“This is an excellent opportunity for us to let people know about our upcoming fundraising drive,” said Jessica Lowe, director of United Way of Jasper County. “It’s also a great way to show mutual support between United Way and Newton Main Street.”

The event is open to the public. Cost is $6 per adult and $4 for kids under 16.

The course covers just under a mile and takes about an hour and a half to play. Golf balls and putters will be provided, but golfers are welcome to use their own equipment.

Scorecards will have a coupon for participating restaurants in the Main Street District, valid only on the day of the mini golf event, on the back.

“We hope the coupon will encourage golfers to grab lunch with the family at a downtown restaurant after their round,” Bassman said.
