Holden evening prayer around the world

The community is invited to join in singing “Holden Evening Prayer” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Maytag Park West Shelter. A potluck supper will follow the service of evening prayer. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is hosting the event.

“Holden Evening Prayer” is a simple contemporary liturgy of song. The Newton service is one of more than 40 Holden events scheduled across the world to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the writing of this song service. Newton’s event is the only one scheduled in Iowa.

The simple vesper (evening) service was written in 1985-86 when Marty Haugen was Musician-in-Residence at Holden Village, Chelan, Wash. The service has been adopted around the world, and the liturgy is sung weekly at Holden Village.

Once a copper mining town, Holden Village is now a robust center for Christian renewal nestled in the mountains west of Lake Chelan in Washington State. Recently the camp has been surrounded by forest fires that are raising havoc in the area. At this time the camp buildings have, not sustained damage from the fires. The village is currently serving as a staging area for the firefighters.

In searching the Internet for Holden Village, one will see pictures and learn more about Holden Village’s ministry.

Consider joining the global community in singing “Holden Evening Prayer” this Saturday. Non-singers are welcome to also come to enjoy the music and the food.
