DES MOINES — Heather Young, of Sully, was named Reserve Sweepstakes winner in the Intermediate Division baking contest judged prior to the start of the 2015 Iowa State Fair.
Young had several entries in the competition taking first place for her peanut butter cookies and sugar cookies (drop). She also had a third place finish with her snickerdoodle cookies.
Charlotte Bowden, of Monroe, also entered into several categories in the contest. Her finishes include: third in appetizers, second in cake balls, first in chocolate almond biscotti and chocolate crackle cookies, honorable mention in chocolate fudge (plain), first in hamburger soup, second in M&M cookies, first in salsa, second in twice baked potatoes and first in waffle cookies.
The competition was open to youth ages 12 to 17. Entries were judged on taste, texture, appearance and creativity.
