Sheriff’s office, feds enter sharing agreement

A sharing agreement between the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal government was approved by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors Tuesday. The board approved a equitable sharing agreement between the two agencies, a standard agreement.

“It’s a formality that needs to be signed with the federal government. An agreement that if we were to work the case whether it is a forfeiture of property or money, they would allow us to share a portion of that,” Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty said.

The sheriff’s office has not had any property or funds shared for several years Halferty said.

“We haven’t worked any large cases with the feds for several years.”

Supervisor Joe Brock gave a brief update on the working being done at the former Jasper County Care Facility and Youth Shelter. This week, Iowa One Call has been at the location completing work and when their work is complete, the surveyors plan to begin.

Workers began checking for asbestos on Monday at the youth shelter, with the care facility to follow.

“There has been enough time since the asbestos abatement the state requires another checkup,” Brock said.

Shive-Hattery Civil Engineer Christopher Bauer continues to move forward on the project, potentially bringing updates to the supervisors as needed.
