Sinclair should support special session

Sen. Tom Courtney

Burlington

At the end of this year’s legislative session, Gov. Branstad made a big mistake that could hurt Iowa’s economy. He vetoed a bipartisan compromise to provide more than $2 million to Iowa’s community colleges.

Community colleges are key to helping Iowans get ahead and creating jobs in our state. They work closely with state and local businesses to identify the skills businesses need and then help Iowans acquire those skills.

That’s why I signed a request for a special session to consider overturning that veto. State Sen. Amy Sinclair, of Allerton, has yet to do so.

I encourage you to contact Sen. Sinclair and remind her that Des Moines Area Community College, Indian Hills Community College and Southwestern Community College stand to lose approximately $662,080, $118,196 and $39,039 respectively if the veto is not overturned.

This funding was approved by the Republican-led Iowa House and the Democratic-led Iowa Senate. We can afford it, and it is the right thing to do.

Please ask Senator Sinclair to put the interests of her district first and support a special session to restore this much needed help to the families and businesses in her district.
