SULLY — Things got interesting late in Tuesday’s Class 1A District 11 quarterfinal baseball game between Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks and Colo-NESCO’s Royals.

The Hawks, playing in front of the home crowd, busted open a scoreless game with four runs in the third innings. They were sailing along as the teams posted two more scoreless innings.

Fighting to stay alive in the postseason, the Royals produced four runs in the sixth to tie the game at 4-all. Back came the Hawks, plating two runs in their half of the inning to regain the lead, 6-2.

The Royals threatened again in the top of the seventh. They even scored a run to narrow the margin to one run.

Lynnville-Sully’s defense held tight to record a 6-5 victory over the Royals. The win put the Hawks into the district semifinals Thursday at home. Lynnville-Sully is also hosting the District 11 championship game Saturday in Sully.

Baker Zegers ripped the ball for two triples and scored a run for the Hawks. Noah Engle and Caleb James went 2-for-3, each driving in a run. Engle had a single and a triple while James laced out two singles.

Kobe Fisk produced two RBIs and had a double in the game. Hitting a single each were Jake Brand, Caden Dunsbergen and Kolton Fisk.

Brand was the starting pitcher for the Hawks, going 5 2/3 innings. He was charged with four runs on four hits and two walks and he struck out four.

James came on in relief of Brand in the sixth inning and pitched the seventh. James got the win, giving up one run on one hit and one walk. He struck out one batter.

Lynnville-Sully (14-11) faces Iowa Valley, which beat North Mahaska, 8-2 on Tuesday, in Thursday’s semifinal. The game is at 7 p.m. in Sully.

The District 11 will be a South Iowa Cedar League team as all four squads in the semifinals are from the SICL. BGM knocked off Colfax-Mingo, which will join the SICL this fall, 5-0 Tuesday, and Belle Plaine rolled past Montezuma , 13-3. BGM hosts Belle Plaine Thursday in Brooklyn.

The semifinal winners play for the district championship at 7 p.m. Saturday in Sully. The 1A District 11 champion advances to the 1A Substate 6 title game July 21 at Pella against the District 12 champion.
