Upset by city’s road improvement plans

Now the City of Newton has gone and done it. Hey city officials — what are you thinking? Why in the world would you take $720K to fix the roads and not fix one of the most important roads in town? Oh which one you say? I’m talking about North Fourth Avenue West.

Two months ago, I was driving down that road and to my delight I saw blue and orange marks lining the road along with blue, red, green and white flags standing in the yards from Highway 14 to West Eighth Street North — clear signs of utility location. Now I’m pretty sure that the entire population on North Fourth Avenue West did not call Iowa One Call call simultaneously, so obviously it was done in preparation for road construction.

On Tuesday, I was looking at the front page of the paper and saw the headline “$720K in street improvements approved by city council,” so I read the article. And to my dismay there were seven streets and not one was North Fourth Avenue West — one of two main roads that more than likely carry some of your children to Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. I am thankful that my wife does not have to endure the ridiculous, and at times unsafe condition, of that road to take our children to school anymore. As a resident, father and local taxpayer I am ashamed of the decision you have made.
