MAT tumblers take first place at state

MAT Tumbling/Trampoline took first place in all three during the USTA Iowa State Championships held at Marshalltown Community College on April 18-19.

MAT took 72 athletes to state and is once again the Top Overall Team in Iowa. MAT continues with its winning ways brining home 30 state champions and 18 runner-ups. MAT also was able to secure 12 out of 17 overall high point awards.

The MAT gym hosted the state championship in both the Babe Harder Gym and the newer Student Activity Center. Both gyms were full as more than 4,000 athletes and their families attended the two-day event.

Saturday saw athletes compete in trampoline and double mini trampoline events. All Power Tumbling events were held Sunday.

“This was a young team that believed in learning, working hard and not being satisfied,” coach Ron Brooks said.

All competitors received medals for flight awards regardless of where they placed in their flights. Those who placed in the top 15 for their age and level received a ribbon and trophy. The state champion received these, plus a patch. The Student Activity Center gym floor was full, as three areas of competition were taking place, along with warm up areas and judging tables. There were also clowns who were making balloon animals to entertain the kids.

The awards area was themed in a Western setting, since the USTA Nationals will be held in Rapid City, S.D. in June. MAT is excited to be taking 60 athletes to nationals and to see what they can all accomplish both individually and as a team.

Chelsea Trotter was nominated and selected as the Iowa Athlete of the Year. This award is voted on by all the judges and coaches in the Iowa, so it is great to have one of the MAT athletes recognized as being one of the best in the State, inside and outside the gym.

Receiving the Sportsmanship award was Lyris Kapayou, MAT Novice 11 year old member. Also nominated for the Vickie Wilson Spirit Award was Mackensie Schuster, MAT Advanced/Elite 16-17 year old member.
