Margaret Ann Atwood, 74, of Newton died Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at her home in Newton. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 2 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.

Margaret, the daughter of Roy and Alice (Sabin) Buchanan, was born on May 1, 1941, in Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1959. Margaret was united in marriage with Thomas Atwood March 10, 1967, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. She worked at Newton Manufacturing Company as a customer service trainer for 48 years, retiring in 2007. After retirement, she worked part-time at the Newton Daily News. Margaret was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Quilt Guild. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, traveling and going on cruises, cooking, baking and shopping. Margaret especially loved her family, going to their events and helping to organize family celebrations.

Those left to honor Margaret’s memory are her husband, Thomas Atwood of Newton; brother, Richard (Linda) Buchanan of Cedar Falls; sister-in-law, Susan Downey of Moline, Ill.; nieces and nephews, Mary (Tom) Fredericksen, Annette Buchanan, Tammy (Dan) Stock, Brian (Tamara) Buchanan, Krista (Tim) Jaspering, Jeff Downey, Sam (Tracey) Downey and Chris Downey; and her great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas R. Buchanan; and a nephew, Craig Buchanan.
