Butterfly Count volunteers needed at Neal Smith NWR

Would you like to learn more about the beautiful butterflies found in Iowa this summer? Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge staff is inviting interested individuals to join them for their annual butterfly count from 1 to 3 p.m. July 12 at the wildlife refuge, in Prairie City.

This free event is open to the public and volunteers of all skill levels and experience are welcome to join. Registration is required.

During the count, a naturalist and other butterfly experts will guide volunteers around a paved, two-mile trail and teach participants the intricate differences between butterflies found on the prairie. Staff will record the species and numbers of butterflies to help track butterfly populations on the refuge.

NSNWR staff recommends that volunteers bring a reusable water bottle and wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen.

To register, contact the refuge at 515-994-3400.
