Library to host one-room school presentation, farming movie

Iowa One Room

Schools Program

Join us on Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a program on One room Schools by Iowan Bill Sherman. This presentation reviews milestones and the impact of Iowa’s network of one-room country schools and uses Jasper County schoolhouses as examples. It describes how former country school buildings are being recycled or have been preserved and are being used today as schools by Amish and Mennonite groups. Learn about Iowa School heroes and about teacher strikes in 1920 in Jasper County that demonstrated teacher concerns. Attendees are encouraged to discuss their country school experiences and bring books, certificates, documents and photographs from their school to share.

Rescheduled Movie:

Future of Farming in the Midwest

Thursday at 1 p.m. join us in the library meeting room for a documentary on Midwest farmers. Most Americans have never stepped foot on a farm or ranch or even talked to the people who grow and raise the food we eat. Farmland will take an intimate look at the lives of farmers and ranchers in their '20s, all of whom are now responsible for running their farming business. Through this film you'll step inside the world of farming for a first-hand glimpse into the lives of young farmers and ranchers.

Learn about their high-risk/high-reward jobs and passion for a way of life that has been passed down from generation to generation, yet continues to evolve. While watching the movie, enjoy snacks from the Newton Farmer’s Market purchased by the Friends of the Newton Public Library.
