Newton Police bring back ‘Soft Cone for a Hard Head’ program

With summer in full swing, the Newton Police Department reminds motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to be mindful of each other and to pay special attention to the appropriate traffic laws. Coupled with the interest in physical fitness and the desire to enjoy this great weather, more and more bicyclists and pedestrians have been seen throughout the city.

In an effort to highlight bicycle safety and helmet use, the Newton Police Department will be promoting the "Soft Cone for a Hard Head" program July 1 through July 31. Students kindergarten through 12th grade who are observed operating their bicycles safely may be awarded a "special citation," entitling them to a free soft serve ice cream cone from a participating business in Newton.

The Newton Police department reminds pedestrians and bicyclists to cross streets at the crosswalks or intersections and to walk facing traffic as close to the curb as possible if sidewalks are unavailable. When walking at night, wear light colored clothing and carry a flashlight to illuminate your path. As with pedestrians, bicyclists are encouraged to wear light colored clothing while riding at night and to always have the proper headlight and rear light for the utmost visibility for yourself and for passing vehicles. Headlights and rear lights/reflector are required to be seen for a distance of 300 feet to the front and rear while riding. Bicyclists must stop at all stop signs and use hand signals when turning. Please help to ensure the remainder of the summer is safe and enjoyable for everyone by taking time to walk, bike, and drive in a safe manner.

“We are excited to offer the ‘Soft Cone for a Hard Head’ program,” said Wes Breckenridge, acting NPD police chief. “We look forward to the positive interaction with our young people and the opportunity to reinforce the importance of bike safety.”

Breckenridge said the NPD last participated in this program about six years ago.
