Coming home to Newton

John Hoover

New York, NY

Thank you to stay-at-home Newton alumni. This weekend is a bit quieter than last because the Newton Fest and the annual reunion migration have come and gone. “Coming home” for those of us who were raised in Newton, Iowa and graduated from Newton High School is made sweeter, if not flat-out possible, every five years by those who “stayed home.”

Our classmates who work hard to plan and do the hard work to execute at reunion time are almost without exception those who have stayed and worked in and around Newton for their entire adult lives. In our Class of 1970 events last weekend, Chris Wickett, Bruce Curtis, Bev White, Barry Hurto, Lynette Talbot, Claudia Madison, Priscilla Hull (using the names they graduated with) worked long and hard and I am sure have not been thanked nearly enough, which is what I want to do here. (My apologies to those I neglected to mention.)

The connection between Newton and those with a history but no address there anymore is made richer for what these and all class representatives and alumni/reunion committee members make possible.
