Hawk girls win; boys lose

SULLY — A six-run inning did in Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team Tuesday at home against West Marshall. Lynnville-Sully’s softball team had a six-run inning to propel it to a win.

The Hawk baseball team lost 13-5 and the Hawk softball team won 8-1 in a non-conference games.

Just down the way on the Hawk softball field, the Class 1A seventh-ranked Lynnville-Sully girls plated six runs in the fourth to gain a 7-0 lead over the Trojan girls. They were up 8-0 before West Marshall scored in the seventh.

The Hawk girls are 16-2, and the Hawk boys go to 7-4. On Wednesday, the Lynnville-Sully teams are back in South Iowa Cedar League play against HLV in Victor. The Hawk teams travel to Sigourney in SICL action Friday.

“We played a very good 2A team tonight in West Marshall,” said Bob Scandridge, Lynnville-Sully baseball head coach. “We hit the ball well, but West Marshall hit it a little better. We are playing good baseball, and playing good non-conference competition only makes us better down the road.”

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but West Marshall had three runs cross the plate in the second. The Trojans’ six-run inning was the third to jump out to a 9-2 lead.

The Hawks were down 10-3 when they scored twice in the fifth. West Marshall added two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh for the final margin.

Kobe Fisk was the Lynnville-Sully starting pitcher, going 2 1/3 innings allowing six runs on four hits and two walks. Tyler Van Zante worked 3 2/3 innings, and was charged with six runs on four hits and two walks and struck out two. Josh Dunsbergen pitched in the seventh, giving up one run on one walk and had two strikeouts.

Caleb James hit a solo home run for the Hawks and had two stolen bases. Baker Zegers hit two singles. Hitting a single each were Jake Brand, Fisk, Kyle Van Dyke and Ross Van Wyk.

For the Hawk girls, Madison Rasmusson threw six innings of shutout softball, giving up one hit and striking out six. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with three base hits.

Maria Rasmusson pitched the seventh inning, allowing one run on one hit and two walks. She struck out one.

Lynnville-Sully had 15 hits in the game. Kasiah Ehresman was 3-for-4 with three singles while Lysandra James delivered a solo home run and a base hit. Brenna Lanser hit two singles.

Riley Rockwell, Lizzy Van Manen, Haley James, Maria Rasmusson and Bayli Van Manen had a single apiece.
