Newton Municipal Band to feature saxophone soloist, Domino’s

The Newton Municipal Band will present its second concert of the season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Maytag Bowl in Fred Maytag Park.

The band is pleased to welcome Murray Moening, band director of the Colfax-Mingo School District to the podium. When not directing the Municipal Band, Moening is a member of the trumpet section.

A highlight of the concert will be a solo piece featuring another area band director, Ben Varner of the PCM School District. He is a member of the saxophone section, and will be accompanied by the band as he plays “Harlem Nocturne,” by Earle Hagen. As always, the band will open the concert with the playing of our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”

The remainder of the concert will include the following pieces: “Among the Clouds,” “Hadrian’s Wall,” “The Battle Cry of Freedom,” “Flight of the Pegasus,” “Highlights from the Motion Picture How to Train Your Dragon,” “Semper Paratus,” “Let the Spirit Soar,” “American Folk Rhapsody No. 3” and “Hosts of Freedom” March by Karl L. King. Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Fred Chabot.

The band is glad to have the Domino’s pizza truck at the top of the hill for this concert. Domino’s, a supporter of the arts in the schools, will be selling pizza by the slice.

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, grab some pizza at the top of the hill and enjoy some great music in the beauty and serenity of lovely Maytag Park. This is the second concert in the Newton Parks Department’s Series of Summer Concerts in the Park.
