Maxwell homers, Stover fans nine in CMB victory

COLLINS — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter sophomore Tucker Maxwell’s two-run home run gave the Raider baseball team a lead and junior ace Brady Stover did the rest on the mound as CMB defeated Roland-Story 5-0 on Wednesday.

The game was called in the sixth inning due to lightning. The win pushed the Raiders into a three-way tie for second place in the Heart of Iowa Conference with Saydel and Roland-Story. Gilbert defeated Colfax-Mingo, 15-0, to move to 7-0 at the top of the conference and Greene County’s loss to Saydel dropped the Rams to 5-3.

Maxwell’s lone hit of the night came with Creighton Caple on base in the third inning. Maxwell’s first homer of the game made it 2-0 and the Raiders added one run in fourth and two more in the fifth.

That was more than enough for Stover, who allowed just four hits and struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings. He is now 3-0 on the year with three complete-game wins.

“Brady stepped up in some really big spots,” CMB coach Max Seeman said. “They had guys at third at least two different innings, and he ended up getting out of some big jams. And I thought we hit the ball much better tonight than we did in the last couple of games.”

Stover has only allowed two earned runs and nine hits in 18 1/3 innings. He struck out 15 in a seven-inning win over Greene County, 13 in a six-inning win over South Hamilton and nine in the victory over Roland-Story on Wednesday.

Roland-Story (10-6 overall, 5-2 in HOIC) came into the game on a four-game win streak and winners of five of its last six. The Norse have hit seven homers and came into the game batting .323 as a team, but Stover was too much on the mound.

CMB (5-3, 5-2) have won four of its last five games and can move past Saydel in the conference standings with a road win against the Eagles on Friday.

The Raiders, who stranded one runner on base, managed just three hits at the plate. Maxwell was 1-for-1 with two runs, two RBIs and a walk. Caple was 1-for-1 with two runs and a walk.

The other hit came from Brad Ritter, and he also drove in a run, scoring Seth Balke, who reached on one of the Norse’s three errors.

Alex Muhlenburg had two of Roland-Story’s four hits. Tyler Hovick and Jake Ford each had one hit. Hovick started on the mound and took the loss after allowing the Maxwell homer.

He fanned five in three innings. Ford also pitched and allowed three runs — one earned — in his only inning.

CMB’s HOIC battle against Saydel in Des Moines will start at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Raiders play in the Colo-NESCO tournament on Saturday.
