CMB softball wins third straight, shuts out Ogden

OGDEN — The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter softball team got an early lead and didn’t look back Friday on the road against Ogden.

The Raiders plated one in the first and then scored six in the final three innings, including a four-run sixth, during a 7-0 win over a Bulldogs team that came into the game 5-2.

Junior Payge Jurgens homered for the third straight game to lead the way offensively and sophomore Abbey Kahler struck out five and allowed four hits in the shutout win.

CMB had nine hits in all. Sophomore Megan Ritter joined Jurgens with two hits and each had two RBIs. MacKenzie Schmitz had one hit, one run, one RBI and one stolen base. The Raiders had five steals in the game, led by Mikayla Eslinger’s two.

The Raiders (4-4) started 1-4 but have since won three straight. During that stretch, they have outscored their opponents, 20-2.

CMB looks to make it four straight wins when it travels to Colfax-Mingo on Monday. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.

PCM takes third at Bondurant-Farrar tourney

BONDURANT — The Class 3A No. 14 Prairie City-Monroe softball team went 2-1 at the Bondurant-Farrar tournament over the weekend.

The Mustangs stayed in the championship bracket with a 4-2 win over Webster City in the opener and then got bumped to the third-place game following a 3-0 loss to host Bondurant-Farrar.

In the third-place game, PCM got back on track with a 10-0, six-inning win over Alburnett.

PCM has won three of its last four games and is now 7-3 on the season. The Mustangs host Saydel at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

In the opener, PCM plated two in the second and led 4-0 after its half of the fifth inning. Webster City scored twice in the fifth to make it a two-run game.

Makenna Van Veen had two hits and Kayla Jennings scored twice to lead the offensive attack. Chelbie Gillespie, Abby Waddell, Jaiden Rogers and Madison Foster all had one hit apiece. Waddell’s hit was a double and she scored once and had an RBI.

Katie VandeWall also walked twice and scored once.

Rachel Freland was the winning pitcher. She allowed two hits and no earned runs in six innings. She had nine strikeouts.

In the loss to the Lady Jays, PCM was held to six hits. VandeWall had two of them, while Molly Vignovich, Jayci Vos, Courtney Bridges and Rogers also had one. Vignovich and Gillespie also walked one time each.

Freland again started in the circle but was given a no decision. She did not allow a run and surrendered just one hit in four innings. She struck out six and walked one.

Taking the loss was Gillespie. She threw the final two innings and gave up three runs on four hits. All three B-F runs were scored in the fifth.

Bridges had an impressive performance at the plate against Alburnett (9-5). The sophomore went 4-for-4 to lead the offense.

Van Veen had three hits and scored three runs and PCM also got single hits from Vos, Jennings and Rogers. Jennings and courtesy runner Camryn Wignall each scored twice. Rogers and Jennings had two RBIs and VandeWall walked twice.

Lynnville-Sully 13, Montezuma 0

MONTEZUMA — Brenna Lanser cranked out a home run and two singles, going 3-for-3, and produced four RBIs in Lynnville-Sully’s 13-0 victory Friday in South Iowa Cedar League play against Montezuma.

Shelby Davis connected for two doubles while Lysandra James had a single and a double in the game that went just four innings. Kasiah Ehresman and Madison Rasmusson each had two singles.

Lizzy Van Manen tripled. Haley James and Makenzy Rozendaal each had a single.

The Class 1A No. 6 Hawks scored three runs in the first innings and four in the second. A six-run fourth inning put the game out of reach.

Rasmusson threw a one-hit shutout. She walked on and struck out six batters.

Lynnville-Sully hosts North Mahaska Monday in Sully.

Saydel 11, Colfax-Mingo 6

DES MOINES – Senior Erin Earles hit her first home run of the season while sophomore Amy Russell and freshman Rhiannon Haley each had two hits at the plate but six errors plagued the Tigerhawks on the road Friday night.

Saydel took advantage of the miscues and scored four runs in the first, three in the third and a pair in the fourth and sixth innings to keep Colfax-Mingo on its slide.

The loss was the Tigerhawks seventh straight as they dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in Heart of Iowa Conference play. Saydel won its second in a row and is now 5-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Earles’ three-run homer came in the second and it trimmed Saydel’s lead to 4-3. Haley doubled, scored a run and knocked in one, while Russell scored a run and walked once.

Colbee Cunningham, an eighth-grader, had one hit, one run and one RBI in the loss.

Russell started in the circle and took the loss. She allowed seven runs – three earned – on six hits. Ries Wilson threw an inning of relief and allowed two hits and two earned runs. Cunningham finished the game and allowed three hits and two earned runs.

The Tigerhawks return to action at 7:30 p.m. Monday when they host Collins-Maxwell/Baxter.
