Newton Police Department

• Harold A. Swan Jr., 40, of Newton, was arrested on a Keokuk County warrant for second-degree theft after authorities were called to 603 E. 22nd St. S. at 6:37 a.m. Thursday. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• David J. Dehart, 21, of Newton, is charged with operating while under the influence after authorities pulled him over in the 1700 block of South Eighth Avenue East at 2:14 a.m. Friday. Officers saw a blue Ford approach a stop sign at a high speed and stop well past the sign. Officers smelled alcohol on Dehart and he had red, watery, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Thomas Lueders, 57, of Golden, Colo., is charged with operating while under the influence after authorities were called to the 1700 block of South 12th Avenue West at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday. Officers were told of driver that had driven through grass and found Lueders as the driver. He smelled very strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes. He admitted to having two beers earlier in the night. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Randi L. Hamilton, 33, of Newton, is charged with fifth degree theft and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities were called to 322 S. Second Ave. W. at 3:35 p.m. Thursday. An employee saw Hamilton enter the dressing room with clothing and under the door saw put the pants on and then put her pants on over them. She was confronted after exiting the room and after arguing took the stolen clothes off and exited the store. Officers located her later and found a pair of shorts in her purse. The item was valued at $4.50. Officers also found a capped syringe and uncapped syringe in the purse. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
