Newton Municipal Band opens summer Concerts in the Park series

The Newton Municipal Band will take the stage Thursday for the first concert of the Newton Parks and Recreation Department series of summer concerts in the park.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Maytag Bowl, in Fred Maytag Park. Director Jim Beerends, NHS Director of Bands, has chosen a rousing slate of tunes for the band’s first appearance of the year. Beginning as always with “The Star Spangled Banner,” the concert will continue with “Be Thou My Vision,” “Fire!” and the first movement of “A Tribute to Grainger,” which honors composer Percy Grainger.

“John Williams in Concert” will feature several of his well-known pieces from TV and movies. Also included in the concert will be “Shenandoah,” “March and Procession of Bacchus,” “Circus Days,” by Karl L. King, and “Kentucky — 1800.” The band will showcase the lower brass instruments in its closing piece, “Them Basses,” by G.H. Huffine.

The band is pleased to welcome back Fred Chabot as Master of Ceremonies for this concert season. All are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets, or make use of the benches in front of the bandshell. Come and enjoy an evening of music in the park.
