Cardinal girls' golf team sits sixth following first day of 4A state tournament

MARSHALLTOWN — Newton High's Cardinal girls are in sixth as a team after the first round of the 2015 Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union 4A State Golf Tournament. The Cardinals posted a 391 for the first 18-holes on the American Legion Memorial Golf Course in Marshalltown Monday.

The second, and final round, of the 36-hold state tournament tees off at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Washington has seven stroke lead over Dubuque Wahlert — 351-358. Humboldt is third at 362, Fairfield is at 383 and Western Dubuque has a 385.

Junior Jessica Reynolds is tied for sixth with two others at 87. Reynolds shot rounds of 42 and 45 with six pars in Monday's play. She is tied with Sarah Frischmeyer of Grinnell and Charlotte Flynn of Wahlert.

Sarah Nacos, a freshman from Washington, and Lindsey Repp, a junior from Fairfield, are tied atop the leader board at 78. Alyssa Sikkema of Assumption is third with an 85. Deanna Peiffer of Washington and Savannah Schnetzer of Humboldt each had an 86.

Newton senior Shelbey Cochran is tied for 35 at 100 on rounds of 48 and 52. Cochran recorded one birdie, which came on hole No. 3, a par 5, in the front nine.

Junior Cydney Hillyard and senior Abby Jolivette are tied for 43rd as both shot 102s for the first 18 holes of the state meet. Both had rounds of 53 and 49. Hillyard had three pars on the first day while Jolivette carded a birdie on No. 16.

Junior Emily Fitzgerald had even rounds of 53 and 53 for a 106 and is tied for 46th. Junior Jessie Smith shot a 108 on rounds of 57 and 51.

Newton finished third as a team at the 2014 state. The Cardinals have two golfers — Reynolds and Cochran — playing in their third straight state tournament and Hillyard is competing in her second consecutive state meet.
