Urbandale ousts CMB early with 10-0 win

URBANDALE — The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls soccer program formed a sharing agreement with Colo-NESCO a few years back.

This year, the Raiders added players from West Marshall to the squad.

While there are positives to adding more players from other districts, the biggest negative may have come back to haunt CMB on Friday.

The Raiders got paired up with Urbandale in the opening round of the Class 2A Region 4 playoffs and the J-Hawks scored early and often in a 10-0 win at Frerichs Field.

Urbandale got three quick goals from its leading scorer Mallory Erbes and then seven others added to the scoring.

The game ended on a goal by Jessie Hovey in the 62nd minute.

“When you have all the options of camps and club soccer and we are just trying to get it started, it makes it tough,” CMB coach Gary Cummings said. “I knew that when we took West Marshall that we would move up to a different bracket.”

The Raiders ended the season 0-13 and were shut out 11 times. It was the first time in Cummings’ 20 seasons as head coach that CMB went winless over the course of a season.

Urbandale improved to 7-11 after the win and will travel to No. 10 Newton (13-4) for a regional semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The J-Hawks played on the offensive attack for most of the night.

Erbes, who has 19 goals on the season, put the home team up 1-0 in the 2nd minute and then made it 2-0 three minutes later. Her third and final goal came just seven minutes into the match.

CMB trailed 7-0 at halftime. Mackenzie Brees, Chelsey Sims and Hovey ended the match with a goal apiece in the first 22 minutes of the second half.

The J-Hawks used three different goalies and each had a save.

Emory Widlowski had a goal and two assists in the win for Urbandale, while Hovey and Ally Richards each added a goal and an assist.

Lexi Breon, CMB’s senior goalkeeper, came in with 290 saves on the season and was busy again for the Raiders. CMB was out-shot 33-3 in the game and Breon made 12 saves in her final game for the Raiders.

"The girls played hard all year long. We never knew positions at the beginning of the year and by the end of the year we knew positions, different runs and where to be at when we didn't have the ball," Cummings said. "I think the girls had tremendous improvement. Now if we can build on that for next year we'll be in good shape."
