SWAT team deployed after man shows handgun at Hy-Vee

The Newton Police SWAT Team arrested a 25-year-old Newton man Tuesday night after he allegedly displayed a handgun to a Hy-Vee employee following a theft.

David A. Letterer stole groceries from the Newton Hy-Vee, 1501 First Ave. E., at approximately 8:40 p.m., according to police.

When an employee approached Letterer in the parking lot, he displayed the gun and then left the scene.

Letterer was later located and arrested at the America’s Best Value Inn,  2000 W. 18th St. S.

He is charged with first-degree robbery, a Class B felony. His initial court appearance is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday. The case remains investigation.
