Fundraiser under way for Newton man injured in house fire

Fire destroyed home early Monday morning

Fundraising efforts are already under way for a family whose home was destroyed over Memorial Day weekend, according to Mikie Hansen, a close friend of Genevieve Henning.

Henning's husband, Aaron, suffered serious burns in a Sunday-night fire that destroyed Genevieve's parents' home.

The Newton Fire Department has not returned phone calls for this story. Hansen said the Aaron Geniveve and Genevieve's parents, Angel and Diana Avila, and a 5-year-old niece were in the home on West 68th Street, west of Newton Sunday night when it caught fire.

All except Aaron were able to escape without serious injuries. Aaron Henning was burned over approximately 65 to 70 percent of his body, according to a gofundme.com entry.

The home is a complete loss, taking with it much clothing and many other household items. Aaron Henning, according to the post, was taken to a burn unit in Iowa City.

"A couple of friends are allowing us to store things for them," Hansen said.

She said friends and family are attempting to coordinate with the American Red Cross to see what services can be utilized.

The GoFundMe entry, created by Lance Hansen, says it is "accepting donations no matter how small or big; anything will help." Donations can be made through GoFundMe.org or by contacting Hansen at 641-417-9381 or Jaci Umbarger at 641-521-8810.
