Tigerhawks compete strong at state

DES MOINES — Colfax-Mingo’s state track meet qualifiers did not bring home medals, but they did have a successful run in the three-day 2015 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium.

Concluding the Tigerhawk competition at state was sophomore Dakota Hostetter running in the Class 1A 1,500-meter race Saturday on Drake’s Blue Oval. She just missed out on a medal, finishing ninth in 5 minutes. 9.69 seconds.

“I came in ranked 23rd, so my goal was just to not get last,” Hostetter said following the race. “I was really nervous coming in. As the race went on, I just tried to tell myself that I could catch some of the runners in front of me. I definitely reached my goal.”

Hostetter combined with juniors Jessica Albright, McKinzie Tjaden and freshman Ries Wilson in the 1A distance medley relay race at state Friday. The Tigerhawk girls were 12th in 4:26.43.

Wilson cleared the opening height of 4 feet, 9 inches in the 1A girls’ high jump Friday. She wasn’t able to move up and finished 18th.

For the Tigerhawk boys, a junior quartet posted a season’s best time of 3:33.72 in the 4x400 relay preliminaries Friday. Blake Summy, Gabe Simpson, Andreas Juul and Jake Lietz went into the state meet seeded 23rd and left 13th, but did not make the finals.

“That’s the fifth-best time in school history. We’ll return five of the six runners/alternates from that team,” said Matt Barkalow, Colfax-Mingo boys’ head coach.
