C-M's Abell punches ticket to state meet

OSKALOOSA — One of the most consistent golfers in the entire state punched his ticket to the Class 1A Boys State Golf Tournament on Thursday.

Colfax-Mingo’s Jimmy Abell has finished outside the top three just once this season and his consistency at Oskaloosa Golf Course allowed him to keep his season alive.

Abell carded a 7-over-par 79 to finish tied for second at a 1A district meet.

The top four individuals and top two teams advance to the state golf meet.

This year, the Class 1A meet will be held at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown and Abell will be one of a handful of players who will be in the mix to win a state title.

Hagin Gillis of New London won medalist honors with a 76 and Kaleb Hagge of Winfield-Mt. Union shot a 79, too. New London’s Tristan Kadel was the fourth individual qualifier as he shot an 80.

New London won the team title with ease after shooting a 331. The other team to qualify for the state tournament was Grundy Center, which shot a 341.

Colfax-Mingo had three really strong scores but finished fifth with a 372. Following Abell’s 79 was Brady DeJoode in 13th and Mason Mosher, who both shot an 85. Mosher finished 11th overall.

Jacob Buehrer had the final counting score of 123. Jake Jeter also shot a 141.

Lynnville-Sully’s Ben Trettin competed in the district meet as an individual. His season came to a close after shooting an 87.

The 1A state golf meet starts at 10 a.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the American Legion Golf Course.
