Fred Chabot will be the speaker at Memorial Day Services at the Wittemberg Cemetery north of Newton on Monday. The service will begin with a Military Honor Guard salute at 9 a.m.
Chabot retired from the Iowa Air National Guard in 2000 with the rank of brigadier general.
He has served as chair of the Newton Preservation Commission and is a member of the Jasper County Historical Museum board of directors. Attendees will need to arrive at least 10 minutes before the service in order to be in place before the honor guard begins. People should bring their own lawn chairs although a limited number will be provided for out of town visitors. In case of rain, a sign will be posted at the cemetery directing people to an indoor site.
