Court: Publicity didn’t sway jurors in Iowa City murder case

IOWA CITY — An appeals court is upholding a man’s murder conviction in the 2012 shooting of an Iowa City man.

Judges rejected claims Wednesday that jurors who found Brandon Brown guilty weren’t truthful during jury selection because they feared publicity. In an unusual development, the ruling contains factual errors about when the trial took place and whether a rule banning live media coverage of jury selection was in effect.

Brown argued the trial became tainted after a reporter live-blogged testimony of a potential juror, including biographical information.

After it came to the court’s attention, the reporter removed the information. A judge ordered no more live-blogging during jury selection.

Brown argued other jurors didn’t answer questions honestly about race and gun violence because of possible publicity.

Judges say Brown failed to show bias.
