Norwalk upends No. 9 Newton

NORWALK — Two late goals allowed host Norwalk Warriors to upend Class 2A ninth-ranked Newton High’s Cardinal girls in Little Hawkeye Conference soccer action Tuesday.

Norwalk scored about halfway through the first half on a goal by Miki Schmidt putting the Warriors up 1-0 at halftime. The Cardinals stormed out of the break to grab the lead.

Sophomore Ryanne Rausch planted the equalizer into the net for the Cardinals seven minutes into the second half. In the 69th minute of the 80-minute contest, Rausch scored again to put Newton up 2-1.

Schmidt tied the game again with a goal in the 71st minute. With time winding down in regulation, the Warriors mounted a charge. Kierstin Vaske scored the go-ahead goal with two minutes remaining in the game.

Newton goes to 1-4 in LHC play and 11-4 overall. The Cardinals play at Boone in a non-conference Friday.

They conclude the regular season at home May 26 against LHC foe Pella Christian. The varsity game is at 6:30 p.m. followed by the junior varsity contest.
