Newton girls close regular season with a win

Newton High’s girls wrapped up the regular season on the tennis courts Tuesday at home against North Polk. The Cardinals dominated winning the dual 8-2.

The Cardinals play in the Class 2A Region 5 doubles and singles competition Thursday at Marshalltown. The regional tournament begins at 9 a.m.

Newton plays in the second round of the Class 2A Region 1 Team Tennis competition Saturday. The Cardinals take on Des Moines Roosevelt at 9 a.m. at Johnston. Des Moines Roosevelt defeated Des Moines East, 5-0, May 16.

The winner plays in the regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Johnston against the winner of Johnston and Ankeny.

Against North Polk, sophomore Katherine Thorpe decked Rebecca Reid, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 5 singles match. Junior Kate Wyre notched a 6-2, 7-5 win over Audrey Ley int he No. 3 singles match. Thorpe and Wyre combined to win the No. 3 doubles match, 6-2, 7-5, over Reid and Emily Washington.

Newton senior Marissa Modlin claimed the No. 4 singles match, rallying to beat Devon Blessman, in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-4, 10-4. Junior Elizabeth Myers got past North Polk’s Kacie Thompson, 7-6 (8), 7-5 at No. 6 singles.

The Cardinals lost the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches in third-set tiebreaker situations. Senior McKenna Heisdorffer lost at No. 1 as North Polk’s Carly Madison rallied to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. At No. 2 singles, North Polk’s Emily Merkle did the same against junior Sierra Griffith, winning 6-7 (7), 6-4, 10-8.

Griffith teamed up with Modlin and battled Madison and Merkle in the No. 1 doubles match. The Cardinal duo won 6-4, 6-4, 10-5. Heisdorffer and Myers made it a clean sweep for Newton in doubles matches, winning 6-3, 6-1 over Ley and Blessman at No. 2 doubles.
