A few weeks ago, our son Isaac, a 9-year-old third-grader at Thomas Jefferson Elementary, had an extraordinary experience. He was invited to the Iowa State Capitol, where he was recognized during a session of the House of Representatives by our local representative, Dan Kelley.

This came about after Rep. Kelley’s staff spotted an article in the Newton Daily News, featuring details on a recent “I Love America Because ...” essay-writing contest, in which Isaac had received first place in the local and district levels, and second place for the state. Rep. Kelley spoke of Isaac’s accomplishments in front of his colleagues, posed with him for photos and invited him on a private tour of the building, which included an amazing (albeit nerve-wracking) climb to the very top of the dome, an area typically closed to the public.

This visit was the culmination of efforts by so many. We want to thank Rep. Kelley and his staff for celebrating academic success. We want to thank the NDN for highlighting achievements by our local students. Last, but absolutely not least, we want to thank our Newton educators. Isaac has had fantastic support from our school district, including teachers Megan Frehse and Lucinda Sinclair, and principal Lisa Sharp, plus his teachers from previous years. We are so grateful to be in this community.
