Newton girl golfers finish third at SEP Invitational

PLEASANT HILL — Consistency came out in Newton High’s golf game Monday on a cold, windy day at Copper Creek Golf Course.

The Cardinal girls shot a 375, which was what they’ve been close to shooting at recent 18-hole tournaments. That score landed them third at the 2015 Southeast Polk Invitational.

“The girls played well under not-so-good weather conditions for golf,” said Scott Enyart, Newton head coach. “It was just a consistent day for our girls. They managed the course pretty well.”

Dowling Catholic won the tournament title with a 226 followed by Marshalltown with a 368. Southeast Polk was fourth with a 390.

Urbandale finished fifth with a 407 followed by Indianola at 478 and Des Moines Lincoln at 481.

Newton had two golfers place in the top 10. Jessica Reynolds finished seventh with an 86 and Cydney Hillyard was 10th with a 91.

Dowling’s Anna Gradovile was the meet medalist with a 77.

Shelbey Cochran ended up with a 97 for the day. Emily Fitzgerald carded a 100 to finish the team scoring for Newton.

Abby Jolivette shot a 102 and Jessie Smith had a 106. Playing to get experience under their belts were Alyssa Bartels, 112, and Lizzy Coyel, 119.

“The girls are hitting their stride. We have a week to practice before hosting our regional tournament,” Enyart said.

Newton hosts a 4A regional golf tournament May 26 at Westwood Golf Course. The Cardinals are vying for another trip to the 4A state meet.
