PLEASANTVILLE — The one constant about Colfax-Mingo’s boys’ golf team this season has been senior Jimmy Abell.

While coach Dave Brahn was trying to figure out what members of the team would compete meet by meet, the one thing he could count on was Abell ending up near the top of the leaderboard.

The Tigerhawks’ one constant rang true Friday at the Class 1A sectional meet at Pleasantville Golf Club. This time though, some of his teammates followed suit.

Abell won another medalist honor with a 3-over-par 73, but the Tigerhawks entire squad advanced to Thursday’s district round with a runner-up team finish.

Lynnville-Sully’s Ben Trettin and Colfax-Mingo’s Brady DeJoode locked up individual top-four finishes as well. Trettin was tied with Abell at even par through nine holes but came in one shot back to earn runner-up honors with a 74. DeJoode was third with a 78 and Pleasantville’s Josh Luna was fourth with an 80.

The top four individuals and top two teams from the Pleasantville sectional advance to districts.

Pleasantville was the overall team champion with a 345. Colfax-Mingo was runner-up with a 352, edging future South Iowa Cedar League foe North Mahaska’s 354.

Wayne was fourth with a 357, Lynnville-Sully came in fifth with a 365, Moravia shot a 383 in sixth and Melcher-Dallas was seventh with a 484. Twin Cedars also played but had just one scoring golfer.

Abell and Trettin both shot an even-par 35 through the first run through of the 9-hole Pleasantville Golf Club course. Neither improved their score the second time through and Abell’s 38 was one shot better.

Abell had seven pars, a bogey and he birdied the par 5 No. 6 through his first nine holes. The second nine presented more of a variety. He had two pars, two double bogeys, two bogeys and Abell birdied the par 5 No. 10, the par 4 No. 13 and the par 5 No. 15.

Trettin had two pars and three bogeys during his first nine. He also birdied the par 3 No. 3, the par 5 No. 1 and the par 5 No. 6. And just like Abell, the second nine gave him more trouble. He began the set with a birdie on the par 5 No. 10 but then double bogeyed No. 11, and triple bogeyed No. 13. He had a par on No. 12 and then finished the round with five consecutive pars.

DeJoode shot a 41 through the first nine holes but improved his number by four strokes in the final run through to get back into top-four contention. Jake Jeter shot a 96 for the Tigerhawks and Jacob Buehrer had the final counting score of 105.

DeJoode had five pars on each nine-hole round. Through the first nine, he had three bogeys and a triple bogey, but he improved that in the second nine with three bogeys and a birdie on the par 5 No. 15.

After Trettin, L-S got a 95 from Baker Zegers, a 97 from Bayley Morvant and a 99 from Caleb Jansen. Kolten Fisk (100) and Kyle Van Dyk (117) had non-counting scores.

Next up for the qualifiers is the district meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oskaloosa Golf Course.
