David S. Cumming

David S. Cumming, died May 8, 2015, in Sarasota, Fla., in hospice care.

David was born July 4, 1948, in Newton, the son of the late John and Barbara Cumming. He graduated from Newton High School in 1966, attended Washington & Lee University, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1970. He moved to New York City and began his career in the hotel industry at the Plaza Hotel Food & Beverage. He worked as personal assistant to Barry Manilow in 1977. He opened the first east coast casino resorts in May 1978, and worked at Foxwoods Casino, Mashantucket, Conn. 1992-1999. David moved to Sarasota in 1999, and became a personal banker. He was the life partner of George Krieger since 1978, and was afforded equality of marriage on Sept. 18, 2011.

He is also survived by his sister Beth Cumming of San Francisco, and other family members.

Celebrations of his life will take place in Sarasota, Fla.; Westerly, R.I.; Old Saybrook, Conn.; Atlantic City, N.J.; Newton and San Francisco. Departure quote: “Don’t Postpone Joy.”
