Nina Farland

Nina Farland, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, May 10, 2015, at Westridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 18 at Christ Church United Presbyterian, by the Rev. Timothy Dyck. A private family burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Arrangements are by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include her two sons, David (Karen) and Tom (Julie), both of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Laura (Steve) Harms, Denise (Jacob) Heffernen, Robert Farland, all of Cedar Rapids and Matthew Farland of Bloomington, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Harms of Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Dwight Carnahan of Camdenton, Mo., Paul (Verna) Carnahan of Gilman, and Charles (Jean) Carnahan of Newburg; three stepsisters, Donna Farland of Waukee, Jackie (George) Graham of Gilman and Marlene Altemeier of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Hazel (Irish) Carnahan; husband, Wayne; daughter, Cathy; stepmother, Marie Carnahan; two brothers, Frank and Boyd Carnahan; sister, Doris Vander Werff; and stepbrother, Joseph Edwards.

Nina was born July 28, 1918, near Reasnor. A 1936 graduate from Newton High School, she was united in marriage to Wayne Farland Aug. 4, 1940. He died in 1990.

Nina was a longtime and active member of Christ Church United Presbyterian. An avid golfer well into her 80’s, she also enjoyed bowling. During World War II, Nina volunteered for the Red Cross as a nurse’s aide. She was a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Nina loved traveling with her daughter and her close friends.

Memorials may be directed to Christ Church United Presbyterian, 2000 First Ave. N.W., Cedar Rapids, IA 52405, in memory of Nina.
