Cardinal boys’ No. 1 doubles team is third at LHC

GRINNELL — James Trettin and John Trettin combined to captured third place in the No. 1 doubles division of Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference boys’ tennis tournament at Grinnell. The Trettins are sophomores from Lynnville-Sully, who play for Newton High’s Cardinals.

Trettin and Trettin opened with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Oskaloosa’s Griffin Wonderlich and Samuel Ginaven. They dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to eventual conference champions, Jaimson Rooseboom and Tom Pettit of Pella.

In the No. 1 doubles’ third-place match, Trettin and Trettin posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Norwalk’s Trey Sievers and Zack Cook.

“An injury forced us to move our lineup around, and we adjusted pretty well, all things considered. John and James played great today,” said Nick Hoskins, Newton head coach.

Newton’s Cardinals ended up tied for fourth with Oskaloosa with four points apiece.

Pella won the LHC tournament championship with 26 points, taking first in No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Grinnell was second with 20 points, winning the No. 2 singles title. Norwalk finished third with 12 points.

Newton sophomore Seamus Vandemore and junior Michael McKinney placed fifth in No. 2 doubles. They lost 6-2, 7-6 (4) to Oskaloosa’s Gerrit Van Maanan and Jackob Kime in the play-in match. The two duos met again in the fourth-place match with Oskaloosa winning 6-3, 6-1.

Senior Jared Griffin played No. 1 singles for Newton, losing to Grinnell’s Edward Lopatto, 6-0, 6-1. Griffin dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Brandon Den Hartog of Oskaloosa in the fourth-place match.

Reid Miller, a sophomore, was Newton’s No. 2 singles player in the conference tournament. Miller lost twice to Tommy Johnston of Oskaloosa, 6-2, 6-2, then 6-0, 6-2 in the fourth-place match.

Sam Dykstra of Pella defeated Jackson Wright of Norwalk, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles title match. Grinnell’s Jonah Benning-Shorb beat Pella’s Nathan Chaplin, 6-2, 6-0, to take the No. 2 singles championship.

Pella’s Roozeboom and Pettit posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Grinnell’s Adam VanErsvelde and Matt Thompson to claim the No. 1 doubles title. In the No. 2 doubles championship match, Pella’s Colin Jones and Ani Tangellapalli pulled out a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Grinnell’s J.P. Dugas and Kyle Cogley.

“The experience was great for our young players, moving into district play on Thursday,” Hoskins said.

Newton plays in a Class 2A district tennis tournament Thursday at Marshalltown. Tennis action begins following coaches meeting at 8:30 a.m. and seeding meeting.

Cedar Falls, Linn-Mar, Marshalltown, Mason City and Waterloo West join Newton in the district tournament. The rain date for the tournament is Friday.
