Newton girls capture LHC soccer win at Osky

OSKALOOSA — Newton High’s Cardinal girls improved to 10-2 on the season with a 2-0 victory against host Oskaloosa Tuesday.

The Class 2A 10th-ranked Cardinals netted their first Little Hawkeye Conference win in three games. They recorded their ninth shutout of the season and have won four games in a row.

“We got a little taste of the warmer weather and a wider field,” said Abby Lamont, Newton head coach. “It made us realize we could use a little work on our transitional offensive attack and spreading the field of play.”

Newton junior Hannah Rhoads and freshman Anna Forsyth had first-half goals. The 2-0 lead held up against the Indians.

“Our defense once again acted as a brick wall and did not allow their offense to break through,” Lamont said.

Addy Blom has done a great job stepping up as goalkeeper to fill in for Ashlee Freese while she has been out with illness, Lamont said. Freese is a sophomore and Blom is a freshman.

“Osky was a very physical team. Ashlee took a hard punch to the torso from an Osky offensive player and suffered separated ribs. She made the save on the play, but will be resting for the next couple of days. There was no call on the play,” Lamont said.

Freese and Blom combined for seven saves in the game. Ryanne Rausch was credited with an assist. The Cardinals had 14 shots on goal.

Newton’s junior varsity won 2-1 Tuesday on goals by Morgan Allen and Carter Lee. Blom was in goal for the junior vasity game.

The Cardinals host No. 8 Pella in LHC play Tuesday at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

There are four Little Hawkeye Conference teams ranked in the top 10 of Class 2A. Dallas Center-Grimes is No. 6 and Grinnell is No. 9.
