Raider boys triumph in final home meet

BAXTER — Running in non-ideal conditions, the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Colfax-Mingo boys’ track teams competed at the Raiders’ final home meet of the season Monday.

With a steady rain falling throughout much of the night, the Raiders won another team championship, scoring top-three finishes in all but one event.

CMB piled up 196 points in getting the win, while Bondurant-Farrar scored 124 in second. Saydel had 113 in third, GMG was fourth with 74 and short-handed Colfax-Mingo scored 35 in fifth.

The Raiders won eight events in all. And scored double points in eight events, too.

“I am happy with the win and happy we got the meet in,” CMB coach Neil Seales said. “We competed hard and it was a good night for us.”

The four field events produced the most overall points. CMB won three of the four and had two of top-four positions in all four.

Patrick Girard won the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 6 inches and Clayton Weltha was fourth with a 44-3. Weltha then won the discus with a toss of 144-5.5 and Girard was third with a heave of 124-0.5.

Hunter Gunderson won the high jump with a leap of 6-2 and Joey Nissen was fourth at 5-4.

Bryce Kemp and Brady Stover also went 2-3 in the long jump with marks of 19-4 and 18-11, respectively.

Stover and Nissen also were part of a win in the shuttle hurdle relay. Kyle Cather, Stover, Brad Ritter and Nissen crossed in 1 minute, 1.29 seconds.

The final two individual wins came from Kemp in the 110-meter high hurdles and Mark Deutsch in the 3,200. Kemp’s win was clocked at 14.81 seconds and Deutsch broke the tape in the two mile in 10:33.41.

The Raiders scored double points in those two events, too. Nissen was fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.11 and Colin Thomson was third in the 3,200 in 11:05.42.

Individually, Kemp also was second in the 200, Deutsch was second in the 800, Evan Bianchi took the silver in the 1,600 and Cather was runner-up in the 400 hurdles.

CMB got double points from Stover (third) in the 400 hurdles and Thomson (fourth) in the 1,600. Cather also was third in the 100.

CMB finished no worse than second in the other five relays.

Dalton Birchmier, Carter Fricke, Joe Keeling and Cather were winners in the 4x400 with a time of 3:50.99 and the 4x800 team of Creighton Caple, Fricke, Jack Cheville and Evan Bianchi also won in 8:56.25.

The 4x100, 4x200 and distance medley relay were all second.

The 4x100 was Birchmier, Ritter, Nissen and Jon Engle and they finished in 48 seconds flat.

The 4x200 included Birchmier, Ritter, Engle and Stover and they hit the line in 1:27.26. The medley featured Birchmier, Engle, Blake Coughenour and Gunderson and they stopped the clock in 4:00.25.

The Tigerhawks focused on healing a few nagging injuries. They did not have Jake Lietz and Cameron Warner at all, Blake Summy and Colin Lourens only competed in the long jump, Jared Myers’ only event was the 110 highs and Gabe Simpson ran in just two events.

The top finishes came from Simpson, who was third in the 400 (53.46) and fourth in the 800 (2:12.19). Lourens was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17-11.5.

Clayton Brown was fifth in the 1,600 and Myers crossed in fifth in the 110 highs.

“We cleaned up a few nagging leg injuries tonight by resting some guys,” Colfax-Mingo coach Matt Barkalow said. “Hopefully that will help us be ready for the final push toward the state qualifying meet.

“Gabe Simpson was terrific tonight.”

Both squads will run at the Cardinal Relays in Newton on Thursday. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.

Two top-three finishes were omitted from the Tigerhawks’ story in Friday’s Newton Daily News. Both events were relays. The 4x400 relay team of Summy, Myers, Andreas Juul and Simpson were second with a time of 3:44.29. The 4x800 relay team also was second in 9:22.46. That foursome included Juul, Brown, Dunsbergen and Adam Teed. Myers’ time in the 110 highs also was incorrect. He finished the race in 17.50.
