PELLA — A little Little Hawkeye Conference history was made Monday. For the first time since Newton became a member of the conference, the Cardinal boys’ golf team was allowed to compete in the LHC golf conference tournament.

Newton’s boys are Class 4A in golf and 4A boys’ golf is a fall sport. All the other boys’ teams in the Little Hawkeye Conference play spring golf. The Iowa High School Athletic Association allowed Newton to compete in the 2015 conference tournament.

The Cardinals finished third in Monday’s tournament at Bos Laden Golf Course. They posted a four-man score of 333.

Norwalk, which spent one season playing Class 4A golf, won the LHC championship with a 328. Pella was second at 332. Grinnell also posted a 333, but Newton’s fifth score was better than Grinnell’s to break the tie.

Oskaloosa’s 345 was good for fifth place followed by Pella Christian with a 357 and Dallas Center-Grimes at 361.

Newton’s junior Derek Damman shot a 79 for the 18-hole tournament to take fifth. Damman and senior Devin Shores, who had an 83, earned Little Hawkeye Conference all-conference honors.

Austin Reynolds carded an 85 for Newton’s third best score and Trey Vanderlaan had an 86. Payton Thomas shot an 88 and Paul Maharry finished at 97.

On April 23, Newton and Norwalk squared off for the Wardinal Cup — a traveling trophy the two schools created a few years ago. Norwalk claimed the Wardinal Cup with a 155 to Newton’s 168. Damman was second in the nine-hole meet with a 38.
