Jury to resume deliberations on ex-mayor’s case

NEW HAMPTON — A jury is expected to resume deliberations Tuesday on the sexual abuse case against the former mayor of Oelwein.

Thirty-seven-year-old Jason Manus is accused of sexually abusing one girl when she was 6 to 8 years old and another girl when she was 14. The case went to the jury on Monday after closing arguments.

Assistant Attorney General Denise Timmins told jurors that, “Somebody’s not telling the truth here. The state submits to you that it’s the defendant.”

Manus’ attorney, Jeremy Thompson, said during his closing statement that there was a reason for the varied stories related by the girls: “I think it’s because nothing happened.”
