Newton High’s tennis teams know where their postseason play begins in 2015.
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced the team regional pairings Friday. Newton is in the Class 2A Region 1 bracket and plays May 23 at Johnston.
The Cardinal girls await their opponent. It will be the winner of Des Moines East and Des Moines Roosevelt. East and Roosevelt square off on May 16 at Roosevelt in the opening round.
Other first round team duals on May 16 in Region 1 are Sioux City West at Sioux City East, Ames at Fort Dodge and Southeast Polk at Johnston.
The winner of Sioux City West and Sioux City East play Sioux City North. The Fort Dodge-Ames match winner will play Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln. Both second-round matches are May 23 at Sioux City East. The winners play in the regional final May 23 at Sioux City East.
Johnston hosts the second-round and regional final May 23. The winner of Johnston against Southeast Polk match plays Ankeny. The winner of that match plays the winner of the Newton/Des Moines East-Des Moines Roosevelt match in the regional final.
The two 2A Region 1 finalists meet May 26 in a first round state dual at Ankeny. The state tournament continues May 27 and Jun 6 in Iowa City.
While they Cardinals are waiting to see who they play in the team regional, they have work to do for the individual and doubles team state tournament.
Newton’s girls are in the Class 2A Region 5 singles and doubles tournament May 21 at Marshalltown. Other teams in the tournament are Ankeny, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Washington, Marshalltown and Waterloo West. Play begins at 9 a.m.
Winning singles and doubles teams advance to the 2A state singles and doubles tournament June 4-5 in Iowa City.
Newton’s boys have been assigned to the Class 2A district tennis tournament at Marshalltown on May 14. In the district meet with Newton and Marshalltown are Cedar Falls, Linn-Mar, Mason City and Waterloo West.
The 2A state individual and doubles tournament is May 29-30 at Cedar Rapids.
The preliminary substate team tennis tournament is May 16, followed by substate team action May 23. The boys’ team tennis tournament is June 2 at Ankeny.
