Cardinal boys lose to ADM Tigers

ADEL — Adel DeSoto Minburn’s Tigers snared a 2-1 victory over visiting Newton High’s Cardinals Thursday night.

But more importantly, the Cardinal boys had a player injured in the second half. NHS head coach Sackda Viravong said senior Brock Southern suffered a serious injury, which stopped play for 45 minutes. He said the injury was to Southern’s right leg, and he was taken to the emergency room, but wouldn’t know more on his condition until Friday.

“We lost one of our best defenders when Brock got hurt,” Viravong said. “After the game, I told the team I was impressed by how they stuck together after we lost Brock and that they didn’t give up. I was pleased with how they played the game and couldn’t ask for more.”

Derek Gushiken scored twice — once in the first half and once in the second — for the Tigers. It was 1-0 when Southern was hurt and Gushiken scored once the game resumed.

Down 2-0, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard with four minutes left in the game. Josh Ventling found the net off a rebound. Newton had 15 shots on gold and two corner kick opportunities.

Grant Davidson made six saves in goal for the Cardinals.

The Tigers improved to 9-2 while Newton dropped to 5-5 overall. The Cardinals host Oskaloosa Tuesday for a 7 p.m. Little Hawkeye Conference game at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

Newton’s junior varsity won 2-0. Nick Rusk scored with 33 minutes left in the first half and Tyler Stanton was credited with an assist. The two switched it up in the second half as Stanton scored off a pass from Rusk at the 12-minute mark.

The freshman game was a close one also with the Cardinals pulling out a 2-1 win. Gavin Aalbers’ corner kick bounced into the net off an ADM player with 23 minutes left in the first half.

ADM scored the equalizer then Austin Johansen took a pass from Preston Sherwood to score for Newton. The Cardinals led 2-1 at halftime. Benny Cheng was in goal for Newton.

Freshman coach Steve Weeks said the Cardinals played with just nine players in the final 10 minutes of the contest against 11 for ADM.

The junior varsity game started before the end of the freshman contest, taking any extra players for Newton, then an injury and a yellow card to a player left the Cardinals shorthanded, Weeks said.
