Cardinal boys are sixth at Tiger Relays

GRINNELL — Newton High’s boys finished sixth at Thursday’s Grinnell Tiger Relays. Mount Pleasant won the team title with 138 points and Newton scored 63 points.

There were eight teams in the competition. Pella was second with 116 points and Grinnell took third with 107.

“Overall, the meet went well. We had a lot of personal-bests and everyone competed well,” said Tom Bartello, Newton head coach.

“It’s always fun to watch athletes fight for place and there was a lot of it last night. Our line up was really a practice run for the conference meet and the athletes showed that they are all ready to compete.”

Deonne Harris lost for the first time in an invitational meet. Harris went head-to-head with Cole Phillips of Mount Pleasant in the 110-meter high hurdles, just as they did at the Drake Relays.

Phillips won Thursday at Grinnell in 14.44 seconds and Harris was second in 15.16 seconds. J.T. Thongvanh gave Newton a sixth-place finish in 16.42 seconds.

Harris took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.92 seconds and Jake Bennett was fourth 1 minute, 1.19 seconds. Harris, Bennett, Thongvanh combined with Jaron Roush to place third in the shuttle hurdle race in 1:02.59.

Christian Laube posted a personal-best time of 4:48 in taking third in the 1,600. Mikey Bradley was eighth in the race at 5:04.33 and Dylan Main placed 13th in 5:26.78.

Newton’s 4x400 relay team of Bennett, Jack Callaghan, Harrison McCarey and Matthew Karsten finished third in 3:45.17.

Karsten ran third in the 100-meter dash in 11.72 seconds. He combined with Josh Miravalles, Carson Cazett and Jaron Roush for a fifth-place time of 1:42.16 in the 4x200 relay race.

Newton’s 4x800 relay team of Callaghan, Bradley, De’Andre Roush and Laube posted a season’s best time of 9:10.51 for fifth place.

Laube finished seventh in the 800 meters in 2:16.90. De’Andre Roush was 11th in 2:27.09 and Bradley placed 12th in 2:27.61. The distance medley relay team of Miravalles, Clayton Baltisberg, McCarey and Callaghan was seventh in 4:09.29.

In the 200 meters, Cazett was 13th in 26.52 seconds, McCarey took 15th in 26.73 and Collin Jacobsen was 20th in 32.17 seconds. Skyler Tool was 23rd in the 100 meters in 15.05 seconds and Jacobsen placed 24th in 16.01.

Callaghan ran 11th in the 400 in 59.09 seconds and Baltisberger was 12th in 1:03.04.

A 4x800 relay team of Zach Theis, Dylan Main, Blake Robson and Chad Nolin ran 10th in 11:09.21. Jaron Roush, Baltisberger, Main and Theis combined for a 4:25.48 timing in the 4x400 relay race for 10th.

Mason Bowes, Jace Lukefahr and Landon Hansen threw personal-best distances in the shot put for Newton. Bowes was 10th at 44 feet, 3 inches. Hansen placed 12th at 40-8.25. Lukefahr was 14th at 40-3.75 and Alex Miller was 16th at 38-8.50.

In the discus, Lukefahr placed 12th at 116-7.5, Bowes was 13th at 115-9, Hansen was 20th at 95-5.5 and Miller placed 22nd at 92-9.25.

Newton prepares for the Little Hawkeye Conference meet Monday at Pella Christian High School. Field events begin at 4 p.m.
