Lucile Powers, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 30, 2015, at Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

Funeral services for Lucile will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 5 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, who have been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left in Lucile’s name or to the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Lucile Powers, 88, the daughter of George E. and Lucile (Quist) Powers, was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Cresco. She was a graduate of the Cresco High School, Class of 1944, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1948, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Vocational Degree in Education. She taught school for several years in Lenox, Albia and then at Berg Jr. High in Newton.

Lucile devoted her life to her family, friends and students, and was a member of the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ, Jasper County Retired School Personnel, Delta Kappa Gamma and 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed being a teacher and enjoyed her students. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.

Lucile was preceded in death by her parents and her brother William “Bill” Powers.

Those left to honor Lucile’s memory include her sister-in-law Barbara J. Powers of Urbandale; her many friends; and many students.
