Iowa Blues Challenge provides dynamic show

If you didn’t make the Iowa Blues challenge at the Izaak Walton league last Sunday you missed one of the most dynamic shows to come to our city. The three bands, in competition for a chance to move on to Memphis, Tenn., put on a show that would be hard to match.

“Good Time Paradigm,” from Pella kicked off with a 30 minute set, that positioned the bar high with a diverse combination of instruments that would make your blues head spin ... including a real string harp. The band put out a great combination newer blues with a touch of jazz.

Diva and the Deacons hit us with an extremely soulful experience that put you on the porch of where blues really comes from. Tina made you know the story in her powerful performance — she can make you laugh, smile and cry all at the same time. This band had such a down home stage presence that it made me want to tuck my napkin in my collar and have some supper with the band.

Now we move on to the winners that will move on to Des Moines for the chance at Memphis. Wooden Nickle Lottery, nailed the big prize with great guitar licks, energy and some ripping vocals. This band from the Cedar Rapids area kicked it hard, and was gracious enough to head up a fun jam at the end of the competition that included members from all of the bands. What a jam! “Wooden Nickles” enthusiasm may take them a long way toward their goal!

The South Skunk Blues Society and the Izaak Walton League are proud to bring these productions to the area and appreciate the participation from our community and sponsors. Please take part and stay aware of these great blues events. Don’t miss the finals at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 in Des Moines. And, don’t miss Newton’s premier music event, the Bowlful of Blues on Sept. 5.
