DNR monitors reports of released fertilizer, ammonia

RED OAK — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says cleanup efforts continue after reports of released fertilizer and ammonia near Red Oak.

Nachurs Alpine Solutions on Tuesday reported an unknown amount of fertilizer had been released, prompting Red Oak officials to close a floodgate to prevent the spread of chemicals. The DNR on Wednesday confirmed a second, separate report of ammonia traced to a Red Oak hog confinement.

Jessica Montana, environmental program supervisor with the DNR, said an unknown amount of pollutants flowed into a tributary of the Nishnabotna River. She says a broken storm water basin likely caused the Nachurs leak. A broken pipe at the hog confinement led to the ammonia release.

The DNR says tests have showed no further signs of contamination.
