MONROE — Rachel Peter made sure the final home meet of her high school career was a good one.

The future Central College Dutch runner won both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs at the Mustang Classic on Monday night.

Sophomore Jayci Vos also claimed a win in the 400-meter low hurdles as the Mustangs placed third against a tough field. PCM scored 98 points and trailed runner-up West Marshall by eight points.

South Tama County was the team champion with 132 points thanks in large part to Isabelle Tyynismaa, who won the 100, 200 and 400.

“There was some tough competition at tonight’s home meet,” PCM coach Bridget Martin said. “The girls came out and gave full effort. We were happy with a third-place finish.”

Peter began the day with a win in the 3,000. She finished in 11 minutes, 44.25 seconds and then came back to win the 1,500 in 5:20.36. She also anchored the distance medley team a silver medal.

That group, which also included senior Mackenzie Clarke, Emily Hugen and Rachel Stafford, finished in 4:34.49.

Vos won the 400 hurdles in 1:08.60. She also opened up the 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley relays that came in second.

She handed the stick to Hugen in both the 4x200 and sprint medley and the other two members of both teams were Clarke and Ashley Van Gorp. They finished the 4x200 in 1:52.18 and crossed the finish line in the sprint medley in 1:58.40.

The 4x400 team was Vos, Tatum Schnug, Stafford and Baylee Smith and they crossed the line in a season-best 4:22.28.

The other second-place finish came from Van Gorp in the 400. She trailed Tyynismaa by more than 3 seconds and held off West Marshall’s Madie Streeter at the finish line.

Van Gorp also collected one of the Mustangs’ third-place finishes. She earned the bronze in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 7 inches. Clarke was third in the 200 with a season-best time of 27.89.

“As we prepare for some big meets, we hope to continue to see times drop,” Martin said. “The tough competition we saw tonight and in the meets early this season is going to be great for us as we head to the final meets of the season.”
